When you visit my shop, you will get a sense of my passion (or obsession) with mermaids, the mythical, magical and wonderful humanoid creatures of the sea. I have art, paintings, prints, figurines and even ship's figureheads, all depicting mermaids.
Mermaids are mentioned in many cultures. going back 1000's of years. One of the earliest mermaid legends dates back to Syria in approximately 1000 BC. The story tells of the goddess, Altargatis who dove into a lake to take the form of a fish. The gods wished for her to retain her great beauty, so only her bottom half became a fish and her top half remained in human form.
In sailor folklore, mermaids can represent good fortune such as prosperity, happiness and love. However, also in sailor folklore, mermaids can be associated with disasters such as floods, storms and shipwrecks.
