Do you love to go antiquing? Do you enjoy hunting for vintage treasures? You might wonder what the difference is between these two pursuits. It is generally accepted that an antique is at least 100 years old, so 1925 or earlier, and a vintage treasure is between 20 and 99 years old.
Many antique and vintage items can be mixed together in your home depending on your personal preferences and decor. In the picture above, the chair is an example of an antique from the Victorian Era (1837-1901) and has beautifully carved wood and rattan caning. The deviled egg plate is an example of a vintage treasure from the 1950s and depicts a colorful rooster.
Things to look for when buying antique wood furniture: Dovetail edges; rose head nails; square headed bolts; and wood pegs. A carved item should be out of solid wood and you will often see marks left from tools. There may be makers marks on the inside of drawers or backs of chairs.
Things to know about vintage ceramics and pottery: They may have crazing marks due to age and show some signs of wear or color fading. However, they are still highly collectible. Many may be signed by the artist on back or have a makers mark. These items must always be hand-washed and never put in the dishwasher.
