Antique Germany Sterling Carnelian and Marcasite Bracelet

Marcasite, derived from the Arabic word for "Fire", is an iron sulfide mineral that has been used in jewelry for centuries, particularly in Europe.

While its name suggests a gemstone, it's actually more closely related to pyrite (also known as "fool's gold"), sharing the same chemical composition but with different crystal structures.

Carnelian has a rich history, spanning thousands of years and various cultures. It was a prized stone in ancient civilizations like Sumeria and Egypt, used for jewelry, amulets, and even in funerary practices. Romans valued it for courage and strength, using it in signet rings. Its use continued into the Middle Ages and later, with alchemists utilizing it and it becoming a popular gemstone in the Victorian era and Art Deco periods.
